What is Inclusion?
Dear Hope Friends,
Many times over the years, you've heard me say that Hope is a "we" church. In many established or traditional churches there is a common question by members: "why don't they do xyz?" "when are they gonna start offering x?" "If only they had y, we'd like this church better."
At Hope Church, there has never been a magical they. I believe that churches were never supposed to operate like the service or hospitality industry (minus a good first impression). In the design of faith communities, there was never supposed to be a group of people doing everything to please "the members". Yes, there are practical matters of organization and administration. Yes there are leaders. And yes at Hope, we have always (even when I was only halftime) background checked and paid child care for our youngest/most vulnerable people. However, in terms of what WE as a church offer, is directly tied to WHO we are - including YOU. What gifts and resources do we have to offer at this time - that includes time and particular talents. And that has shifted based on who is part of the congregation.
You will rarely, if ever, hear me say that I am here to serve you (a common thing pastors say). It was my job to serve people when I was a waitress during high school. My role at Hope is to provide vision, spiritual leadership, and direction. Yes, I seek to do that from the perspective of a servant's heart. But if I'm not here to serve you - you aren't here to be served.
Why do I bring any of this up? Because tomorrow we are talking about inclusion. Together we belong to this faith community so can support each other, grow together, and serve the broader community. Together, we lift each other up. With different talents, different gifts, and different capacities. THIS is what inclusion is. THIS is the body of Christ.
In It With You, Jennie
P.S. I am also so sad to share that our own dear Dalene Kuebler died this morning peacefully with her family present.
