Holy Week 2025
Dear Hope, Yesterday, someone asked me, "People get weird about some made up 'war on Christmas', but what about the war on Easter?" I mean, of all the things I'm legitimately worried about right now in our country, this doesn't even hit top 5000. I'll be honest, I don't think I've heard anyone outside worship design meetings with Isaac talk about the fact that all Christians are entering Holy Week, starting tomorrow. Likely it's because minus a ham, some colored eggs, and a basket or two - this is not a holiday that can be purchased. For those who want to commemorate Jesus' final week on earth and celebrate the Resurrection, it requires engagement in personal or corporate spiritual practices. In thie conversation yesterday, the "war" was somewhat about time off from work. They need to work Easter weekend with their team, mostly in another country, but those same co-workers had taken their religious holidays off. My guess is that their co-workers were likely fasting and praying during their religious observance, not simply getting a day off. I wondered how many Christians/Christ-followers could articulate the time-consuming spiritual practices that would make it difficult to work? Not a question baked in any kind of shame or tsk, tsk. Just observation. In my little corner of the world, school activities will continue to happen all week. People always ask, "are you ready for Christmas?" I don't think it's a spiritual questions, so let me ask this spiritually - how might you prepare for celebrating Easter? A few moments every morning considering Jesus' last week? One of the Hollywood depictions of this final week? (personally I like watching Jesus Christ Superstar) Reading through Luke 19-24? At Hope, we'll offer worship tomorrow morning, Monday Bible Study, Tuesday Creator Space, and Maundy (Holy) Thursday Worship. Note there is not Wednesday programming. |
